Majel Connery Composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Majel Connery creates gorgeous immersive musical experiences that bring classical forms and instruments into dialogue with electronic sounds and textures. Her “thoroughly Schubertian” (Wall Street Journal) compositions feature a voice that the New York Times calls “superb.” Joined by cellist Patricia Santos, Majel will be sharing works from her latest project, “The Rivers Are Our Brothers,” a song cycle on ecological responsibility told from the point of view of the land. Penelope
Broadway’s Grace McLean (currently in SUFFS) stars in PENELOPE, a musical re-telling of the Odyssey for one actor and a five-piece chamber orchestra.
At the beginning of the pandemic, composer/creator Alex Bechtel was forced to quarantine in separate cities from his romantic partner of many years. As time went on and their distance grew, Bechtel composed music from the point of view of the Odyssey’s Penelope to fill the growing space and answer the endless questions. That music, with the help of co-book-writers Grace McLean and Eva Steinmetz, has become a solo musical by turns aching, hilarious, haunting, and explosive. After successful productions at Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival and Signature Theatre DC, Steinmetz directs Grace McLean’s return to the title role for this intimate concert version of PENELOPE at Joe’s Pub.

Banned Books Week Artists in Residence Five artists from The Bushwick Book Club (BBC) will embark on the anti-censorship experiment of living in the Kurt Vonnegut Museum & Library while writing a new album of Vonnegut-inspired songs from scratch! During Banned Books week in-person and virtual visitors will be able to interact with the artists in residence as part of the songwriting and album-making process. There will also be daily events and workshops documenting the project. And the BBC ensemble will collaborate with local Indianapolis artists and students on the project, which will culminate in a performance of the new album live at the museum at the end of the week.
